Guotai Junan and Haitong Securities to Launch $10 Billion in Industry Funds in Shanghai

China’s prominent financial institutions, Guotai Junan Securities and Haitong Securities, have revealed plans to establish three industry-focused funds of funds (FoFs) in Shanghai with a combined target pool of RMB 89 billion (approximately USD 13.1 billion). These funds, to be managed by a newly formed entity, Shanghai Guotou Pioneer Private Equity Fund Management Co., Ltd, will allocate RMB 45 billion to integrated circuits, RMB 21.5 billion to biopharmaceuticals, and RMB 22.5 billion to artificial intelligence respectively.

Each of the three funds is designed with a 15-year lifespan, with the integrated circuits and biopharmaceuticals funds registered in Pudong, and the artificial intelligence fund in Xuhui district. This initiative is in line with Shanghai’s March policy announcements, which aimed to stimulate growth by promoting the establishment of RMB 100 billion industry FoFs, covering the aforementioned sectors.

These funds are part of the government’s broader efforts to bolster key industries and drive innovation and growth in Shanghai. The FoFs are expected to play a pivotal role in channeling investment into strategic sectors, fostering technological advancement, and enhancing Shanghai’s position as a global hub for technology and innovation.

The establishment of these funds reflects China’s commitment to leveraging private equity to support high-value industries and underscores the role of financial institutions in catalyzing economic development. It also signals a significant move towards creating a robust ecosystem that can support research, development, and commercialization of cutting-edge technologies in integrated circuits, biopharmaceuticals, and AI.

As these funds are realized, they are expected to not only attract further investment but also stimulate collaboration among industry players, researchers, and government entities, ultimately contributing to the sustainable growth and global competitiveness of Shanghai’s key industries.- Flcube.com
