The National Health Commission (NHC) has released the 10th edition of the national COVID-19 Diagnosis and Treatment Plan, introducing multiple changes to diagnosis and treatment guidelines, standards for admissions, discharge, and other protocols. The document aims to enhance treatment and diagnosis efficiencies, reflecting the evolving understanding and management of COVID-19.
Key Changes and Guidelines
The updated plan includes several notable changes, such as altering the Chinese wording for COVID-19 from “novel coronavirus pneumonia” to “novel coronavirus infection.” Antigen tests are now permitted to support diagnosis, and physicians are no longer required to declare “suspected COVID” cases based solely on clinical symptoms.
The new document subdivides COVID-19 patients into four stages—mild, moderate, severe, and critical—based on the severity of their condition. COVID-19 is now classified as a Category B infectious disease, meaning that centralized isolation for related patients is no longer required, and infected patients may be admitted by medical institutions of all levels.
Treatment and Discharge Protocols
The guidance provides detailed warning signs and indicators for severe and critical cases, along with updated treatment recommendations reflecting the latest drug approvals. Specifics on vital sign monitoring indicators, particularly oxygen saturation and early warning indicators for severe cases, are also included.
The NHC no longer requires nucleic acid test results for the discharge of infected persons. If the condition of infected persons has significantly improved, they can be considered for discharge after being reviewed and judged by clinicians. Additionally, the new plan calls for adjustments to infection prevention and control in medical institutions, including the implementation of outpatient and emergency pre-examination and triage systems, enhanced hospital environment disinfection, personal protective equipment for medical personnel, and standardized treatment of medical waste and terminal disinfection.
Future Outlook
The release of the 10th edition of the COVID-19 Diagnosis and Treatment Plan underscores the NHC’s commitment to adapting treatment protocols based on the latest scientific evidence and practical experience. By streamlining diagnosis and treatment processes and providing clear guidance on patient management, the plan aims to improve patient outcomes and enhance the overall efficiency of healthcare delivery during the ongoing pandemic.-Fineline Info & Tech
