China’s NMPA, MPS, and NHC Announce Updates to Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Catalog

The National Medical Products Administration (NMPA), Ministry of Public Security, and National Health Commission have Jointly released a notification concerning the adjustment of the narcotics and psychotropic substances catalog in China. The updated catalog, which adds seven new varieties, is set to take effect on July 1, 2023.

Details of the New Entries
The new entries to the catalog include:

  1. Oliceridine: Added as a narcotic drug.
  2. Suvorexant, Perampanel, Eptazocine, and Tramadol: Listed in the second category of psychotropic drugs.
  3. Compound Oral Solid Formulations Containing >5mg of Hydrocodone Alkaloids per Dose: Included in the first category of psychotropic drugs, provided they do not contain other narcotic drugs, psychotropic drugs, or drug-like precursor chemicals.
  4. Compound Oral Solid Preparations Containing ≤ 5mg of Hydrocodone Alkaloids per Dose: Listed in the second category of psychotropic drugs, under the same conditions as mentioned above.

Historical Context and Catalog Expansion
China first released its narcotics and psychotropics list in November 2013, which included 121 anesthetic drugs, 68 Category I psychotropic drugs, and 81 Category II psychotropic drugs.
