WASHINGTON—A Reuters investigation into the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) data has uncovered that over a thousand patents registered by Chinese inventors have received financial support from the US Defense Department, NASA, and other federal agencies. The analysis, which reviewed data from the USPTO dating back to 2010, identified 1,020 patents with US government funding that involved at least one inventor residing in China.
Among these patents, 197 were in the pharmaceutical sector and 154 were related to biotechnology, indicating the strategic importance of these industries to the US government. The Department of Health and Human Services topped the list of funding sources, with its financial backing present in 356 patents.
The US government’s investment in these areas underscores the significance it places on the advancement of strategic industries, such as biotech and pharmaceuticals, which are often at the forefront of innovation and national security considerations.- Flcube.com
