Shi Bingyi, a distinguished Member of the National Committee of the CPPCC (Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference) and Director of the Organ Transplantation Center of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), has disclosed that China’s Ministry of Health has convened a panel of 70 experts to rigorously assess hospitals involved in organ transplant procedures. This initiative will result in the authorization of select hospitals to continue performing transplant surgeries, while others will be mandated to cease these operations.
Shi elaborated on the criteria for organ donation, indicating that eligibility will be restricted to spouses and blood relatives within a three-generation limit. Exceptions may be considered for patients receiving organs from non-blood-related donors under specific circumstances. Shi placed a strong emphasis on ethical considerations, stating that transplantation surgeries must not proceed if the donor’s consent is influenced by economic hardship, family coercion, or psychological duress.
