The National Health Commission (NHC) has issued a notification announcing the establishment of the National Authority for Containment (NAC), a new body dedicated to poliovirus management. This initiative comes in response to the significant global progress made since the World Health Organization (WHO) launched its polio eradication campaign in 1988, which has seen a reduction of over 99.99% in the number of wild poliovirus cases worldwide.
China has maintained a polio-free status since 2000; however, the risk of importing wild poliovirus from neighboring countries persists. The establishment of the NAC is intended to regulate the establishment and operation of institutions that handle poliovirus, thereby effectively mitigating biosafety risks. This move also ensures the secure development and utilization of related vaccines, contributing to the ongoing efforts to control and prevent polio.- Flcube.com
