Olympus Corp. to Invest $40.6 Million in New Endoscope Factory in Suzhou, China

Japan-based optics giant Olympus Corp. is expanding its footprint in China with a planned investment of USD 40.6 million in a new factory located in Suzhou. The facility will specialize in the manufacturing of endoscope products, reflecting the company’s commitment to the Chinese market.

Growing Significance of the Chinese Market for Olympus
The decision to establish a new factory in China comes amidst the backdrop of the country’s growing importance to Olympus. In the fiscal year ended March 2022, Olympus generated JPY 100.9 billion (USD 750 million) in annual sales in China, a figure that is nearly on par with the company’s home market of Japan, which contributed JPY 110.8 billion over the same period. This investment underscores the strategic importance of the Chinese market for Olympus’s global operations.

Olympus’s Portfolio and Global Manufacturing Operations
Olympus’s product portfolio is broadly divided into endoscopic and therapeutic solutions, encompassing gastrointestinal endoscopy, surgical endoscopy systems, and minimally invasive devices that support endotherapy in various fields, including urology/gynecology and ear, nose, and throat. In addition to its new factory in Suzhou, Olympus operates other manufacturing facilities outside of Japan, such as the production of rigid surgical scopes in Germany and endoscope parts in Vietnam.-Fineline Info & Tech
