On April 2nd, a landmark healthcare initiative, the “Hypertension Prevention and Treatment Research” project, commenced in Beijing with the backing of China’s Ministry of Health (MOH) and Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST). This ambitious project is structured as a multi-center clinical trial, encompassing 150 clinical centers and engaging 13,000 participants over a span of five years.
The primary objective of this project is to identify effective treatment strategies for the 160 million individuals in China grappling with hypertension. The MOH asserts that this will be the first large-scale research endeavor focused on hypertension globally. The outcomes of this research, anticipated to be released in 2011, are poised to significantly influence the evaluation, prevention, and treatment protocols for hypertension within the country.
A concerning statistic highlighted by the MOH indicates that a mere 6.1% of hypertensive patients in China are effectively managing their condition, underscoring the urgency and importance of this research.
